BILBO MAKE A PROMISE...

`WE'RE CHARTBOUND OR BUST!'

Bilbo are fed up! They've been slogging away - But they still haven't had a top twenty hit!

"But our new single, 'It's a Shame' is different," said Fid. "This'll make it. It's a winner . . . I promise!"

Life hasn't been easy for Bilbo. Luck hasn't been with them, and it's beginning to show.

"But we've not lost hope," grinned Brian, "not now we've released this new record, 'It's a Shame' ... it's just got to make the charts!"

Bilbo's last single just hovered outside the charts, but it never quite got in.

"We were on tour with Mud when it was released," said Fid. "We thought that would give it a boost, but it didn't quite work like that".

"All the same, the tour was great fun. The Mud lads are fantastic ... a right laugh," said Tosh. "That was the first set of dates we'd ever done outside Scotland, too."

LONELY STRUGGLE

Bilbo may not have made it to the top yet - but they've come a long way from the really dark 'n' hopeless days they struggled through just a year ago.

"Things have been pretty desperate," Colin told us, "so although we're not stars yet, when we look back we can see just how much better things are for us now than they have been.

"We've all worked at really bum jobs just to make enough money to live.

"Music-wise there's always been loads of work for us up in Scotland. Our fans have been wonderful - but it's across the border we've wanted to get!

"It's so hard to break thru' down South, y'know. There's so much competition, so many groups who are having to struggle even harder than us - and only a few will make it!"

ROCK BOTTOM

It's only recently that Bilbo have had a decent van to lug their gear around in. They've had to put up with getting from gig to gig in the kinda buggy that has to be pushed everywhere!

"I'll never forget the time we were driving through the middle of the Highlands on our way to the Orkneys for a gig once ... and the van broke down," said Dev. "We were miles from anywhere and we couldn't get out and walk 'cos it was pitch black!

"We just had to kip down for the night in the back of the van. We were starving hungry.

"Then suddenly Brian let out a whoop! "Hey lads ... look what I've found!" he yelled.

He'd discovered a packet of mouldy old cheese sandwiches in his guitar case!

"At least we had something to eat that night ... even if it was only enough to feed a mouse on! We weren't sorry to see that van go to the scrap yard!"

NEARLY SPLIT

Things have been so bad that the tension has brought Bilbo to the verge of splitting.

"We were at a gig in Exeter," explained Tosh. "It had taken us hours and hours to get there. We were all too tired and very scratchy.

"We started bickering and things kind of exploded. Fid marched off and was going to hitch home in a temper. The band was on the verge of splitting up!"

But luckily for us the lads calmed down just in time -and made it up!

Fid was pacified - and they decided to keep going.

"I suppose all groups go through periods like that when everything just gets too much and you feel like you're wasting your time even trying. I know giving up would have been the easiest way out!" said Colin.

KEEPING FINGERS CROSSED!

But Bilbo are well past the bickering stage. Past those extra grotty dates, too.

"We've come far enough to be able to see how near to getting to the top we are ... but we just can't quite make it.

"We haven't been lucky with our singles up 'till now," reckoned Brian. "We're stuck in that in between bit where most folk have heard of us . . . and we've got some lovely loyal fans.

Stardom is just over the horizon, One hit record away ...

"But this new single of ours `It's a Shame' is different, It's a winner ... and it'll see us in the charts for sure! Just you wait and see if we're not right!"

Okay, Brian - we'll give you one more chance to make it into the charts!
