Following In The Rollers Footsteps
When
Bilbo Baggins first hit the scene they were immediately labelled, ''The
Second Rollers"... much to their dismay!
Y'see, just about the only thing
Bilbo Baggins have in common with the Rollers is Tam Paton. He's their
manager too!
To be honest, the Bilbo Baggins
lads do have slightly more in common with the Rollers than just their
dynamic manager, Tam.
All the lads, except drummer Fid,
are from Edinburgh ... and, like the
Rollers, they're both talented 'n' good-looking. But their music is completely
different.
Fid is a Glasgow lad ... "But
then we can't all be perfect, can we?" pianist Brian laughed. "There's
a pretty strong feeling of rivalry up here between
Edinburgh and Glasgow," he added. "Still
Fid's one of us now!"
The rest of the band consists of
Tosh (guitar), Colin (vocals) and Dave* (bass guitar).
GETTING SET
Bilbo Baggins have only been together
for two and a half years, but in that time they have established themselves
as an up-and coming group.
"We were all playing in different
bands before then," Brian told us, "but although we hadn't played
together we all knew each other. In Edinburgh all the musicians know each
other!"
As soon as they merged into one
group, Tam Paton took them under his wing - and they've be playing professionally
ever since.
HARD TIMES
But playing professionally doesn't automatically mean that the fellas
are out of the hard times.
"We've had some rough times,
alright," Brian told us. "But I think we're through with most
of that now."
One of the unluckiest things that
ever happened to the band was when they released their single, "Saturday
Night".
"It got to number 52 and we
were asked to go on Top of the Pops. Then, just as we were about to leave
to drive down to London the television people went on strike ... and that
was that!" Brian said.
BREAKING INTO STARDOM
But, despite that set-back, Bilbo
Baggins are set on following the Rollers' example and making the superstar
stakes. They are releasing a single any day now and are out on the road,
too!
"Folks think we're just like
the Rollers because we're Scottish and with Tam. Obviously we're not.
The only part of the Rollers we want to copy is their success!" Don't
fret lads ... that's just what we reckon you're gonna do!
* I think they meant Dev, not Dave.
